Etnographic Museum of A Capela

Etnographic Museum of A Capela

The museum

The association “Patronato do Museo Etnográfico da Capela" is promoted by the city council of A Capela and the public school “Mosteiro de Caaveiro”. The public school donated an interesting etnographic collection, as a result of a socio-pedagogic experiment which started in 1981. The educational experiment was conducted with the contribution of students; teachers and neighbours with the aim of showcase and recover elements from Galician traditional culture.

In 2003 the museum was moved to the Rectory House in the parish of Santiago da Capela, also called 'Casa do Pazo' - current central Address of the museum. The museum presents the house as the rural society's basic unit. A tour through the halls (kitchen, bedroom, weaving hall, farm, forge, plot and other traditional trades) allows the visitor to come closer to the locals' ways of life and work, which are on the verge of disappearing due to time evolution.

Coming soon, the opening of the 'Escola de Guitriz', where a mid-20th century rural school will be display, along with the evolution of education in A Capela - thanks to the collected material from local single classroom schools.
